More About Melik

Part of the Metro Melik Story

Allow me to introduce myself.

I grew up during the era of school busing, even though we lived in the suburbs. Living in North Carolina and Kentucky, I witnessed racism in ways I couldn’t quite understand at the time. One thing my mother said when I was a child still lingers with me:
“I think they were trying to show you Klan stuff, but you didn’t know to be scared.”

She said it so casually it seemed like a throwaway line, but it hit deep, and it still stings as my hair turns gray. That was it, no change in behavior, no warning, no guidance. No one told me not to play with the kids who insisted only whites could drink from the hose. One kid "saved" me by pointing out that the palms of my hands looked white.

Still, I've lived a blessed life, one that’s included more face-to-face moments with death than I can count. At 19, I survived slamming into a tree at 96 mph. I dropped out of college and university more times than I can remember. I refused to be excluded from spaces where people who look like me “shouldn’t” be. I’ve sat in rooms where my presence wasn’t welcome, simply because of my skin.

I’ve learned a lot living in Lansing, Michigan. I’ve done acting and modeling. I’ve worked alongside some recognizable names like Michael Imperioli, Keanu Reeves, and Elizabeth Berkley—in industrial films, commercials, movies, and television. I hosted a live call-in talk show that ran for 13 and a half years (ask any 4-year-old—the half matters).

I’ve spent years in the studio making music I’m proud of. I even had a comedy stint that took me all over the region and led to producing my show. I’ve created many productions, including the inception of the 517 Day Celebration—now officially recognized by the City of Lansing and the Governor of Michigan.

I’m a published author and photographer. My video work has supported individuals, small businesses, and even the State of Michigan’s firefighters. I’ve worked in food service, libraries, and fundraising, and I’m never afraid to roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty.

I’m deeply thankful for the variety of experiences I’ve had in life, and now, I’d love to put them to work for you.
