The Beatles sang, Oh, I can get by with a little help from my friends. As someone who has been fiercely independent for most of my life, that phrase has always resonated with me. But in 2024, I learned just how true it really is. That year hit me hard, one of the worst I’ve ever faced, with ripple effects I’m still feeling. That’s just the reality of my story, no blame placed.
I know I could have gotten through it alone, but I also know this: having the support of others, in so many different ways, changed my life for the better. So much so that I’ll probably spend the rest of my life on a gratitude tour, thanking those who showed up when I needed them most.
So if you’re struggling, please know this, you don’t have to do it alone. I understand that asking for help can feel as difficult as climbing a mountain without training. But I promise, someone in your world is ready to offer a hand, even if it’s just to listen. There’s no shame in reaching out. Some tasks are just too big to take on alone.
I was reminded of this when I found myself pushing my 800-pound motorcycle, staring up at a hill in the road. I could have kept struggling, but I knew I had to stop and wait for help. There was no sense in hurting myself trying to do something that was meant to be done with help.
So whatever life mountain you’re facing, don’t be afraid to reach out for that boost. You’d do it for someone else, why not allow someone to do it for you?
